Andre Konstantinovic Geim was born to Kostantin Alekseyevich and Nina Nikolayevna Bayer on 10 October 1958 and after graduation ,he studied or the Moscow Engineering Pyhysics Institute. After earning his PhD,Geim worked as reseach scientist at the Istitute for Microeletronic Technology (IMT) at RAS,and from 1990 asa post-doctoral fellow at the Universities of Nottingham (Twice),Bath, and Copenhagen.
He later gained Ducth citizenship and one of his doctoral student at Nijmegen was Kontantin Novoselov, who sent on to become his main reseach partner.Geim achievements include the discovery of a simple method for isolating single atomic layer of gharhite, know a graphene,in coliaboration with researchers at the Unniversity of Manchester and IMT.Graphene cosists of one-atom-thick layer of carbon atom arranged in two-dimesional hexagon, and it is the thinnest material in the world,as well as one of the strongest and hardest.
Geim was involvedin teh development of a biomicmetic adhasive which became know as gecko tape,so called because of the adhesiveness of gecko feet-reseach of which is still in the early stages
